Not related to the post, but I saw you wanted ideas for green tomatoes. I don't have a Serious Eats account so I thought I'd just tell you here.
I once saw Martha Stewart make green tomato pickles. She used pickling lime, but I'm sure there's more simple recipes that can be made without pickling lime. I suggest you look up a recipe for that maybe?
